At the 2026 Developer Day, OpenAI and ModRetro announced a partnership to integrate the Codex AI agent tool with the Chromatic handheld gaming console. The collaboration introduces a dedicated plugin called Game Studio, designed to streamline game development for the device.

The Chromatic console features an aluminum body, a custom LCD screen, and supports original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. It also allows users to run custom-made software. The new Game Studio plugin enables developers to describe game concepts using natural language, which Codex then translates into functional code.

The Game Studio plugin includes a built-in emulator for the Chromatic console. This allows developers to test their projects on a computer before streaming them to the physical hardware. Once development is complete, users can write their programs onto dedicated blank cartridges to play them directly on the device.
