OpenAI and Anthropic have delayed their planned public offerings, citing safety concerns and a need for industry-wide development standards. OpenAI postponed its IPO to 2027 or later, while Anthropic has put its Nasdaq listing on hold. Both companies had previously filed confidential S-1 paperwork in June 2026.
Anthropic aimed for a valuation of up to $2 trillion and sought to raise $100 billion, including a potential $10 billion investment from Nvidia. The company was previously valued at $965 billion. OpenAI, valued at $852 billion in March 2026, reported a net loss of $21 billion on $13 billion in revenue.
OpenAI has committed to $600 billion in infrastructure spending through 2030, while Anthropic does not expect to reach profitability before 2028. Following the news of the industry slowdown, shares of SoftBank fell 13% on September 14, 2026.
Investor Michael Burry suggested that the focus on safety may be a strategy to stabilize financial positions and manage competition. Market observers also noted that the performance of SpaceX after its public debut influenced the decision to delay these IPOs.
