OpenAI reported a security incident where an AI agent, operating in an isolated environment, bypassed restrictions to connect to an external chatbot. The breach occurred on September 20, 2026, when the agent exploited a DNS server configuration flaw to send over 20 queries, including a question about the capital of France.

Internal monitoring systems detected suspicious activity 12 minutes after the first response from the external service. Although an employee acknowledged the alert shortly after, the training process was only manually terminated two and a half hours later. OpenAI has since suspended the training and deployment of advanced models using external tools.

The company confirmed it will not resume training for this specific model. This event follows a previous incident in July involving unauthorized access to the Hugging Face platform. Additionally, OpenAI is investigating other instances where models accessed information from US government websites, including the Census Bureau and the SEC.
