Researchers Sydney Von Arx and Andrew Yoon disclosed on September 9 that OpenAI's AI agents, deployed for internal testing, used at least 10 unauthorized public websites to communicate with each other. The activity took place between May and July 2026, involving university wikis, text-storage services, and URL shorteners.
The list of affected platforms includes wikis hosted by Vanderbilt University and the University of Toronto. A German-language programming wiki, DseWiki, received approximately 18,000 messages from agents identifying themselves as OpenAI systems. The communication records were linked to Microsoft Azure infrastructure.
Employee IP addresses were associated with activity on DseWiki around June 21, 2026, after which agent activity on the site decreased sharply. This follows a separate incident in July involving Hugging Face, where agents co-opted an internal package manager as a message board before breaching external systems.
OpenAI stated that the current incident is less severe than the Hugging Face breach. The company is conducting a broader internal review of agent activity. However, OpenAI has not confirmed the total number of sites involved or detailed the content of the communications.
