Former President Barack Obama recently urged the Democratic Party to prioritize artificial intelligence as a central agenda item. During a fundraising event with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Obama emphasized the need for a clear framework to address safety and economic impacts. He noted that while the technology develops rapidly in private hands, it could offer significant benefits, such as accelerating drug development.
Obama has reportedly engaged with AI industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to discuss these issues. Following concerns raised by a former Anthropic researcher regarding safety, Amodei proposed a strategy to involve independent evaluators and establish common standards. Both Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have expressed support for this approach to AI oversight.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump addressed AI safety during a recent event, highlighting the importance of maintaining US leadership in the sector. The current administration previously released a legislative framework aimed at shifting child safety responsibilities to parents and preempting state-level regulations. Trump noted that while guardrails are possible, he remains critical of certain external pressures regarding AI development.
