Chinese authorities are reportedly considering allowing Alibaba and ByteDance to purchase a new Nvidia chip designed for professional workstations. The RTX PRO 5500 model features 84 GB of memory and a power consumption of up to 600 watts. This hardware is intended for AI agents, inference, and simulation tasks, falling outside the scope of current US export restrictions on data-center chips.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has requested information from the two companies regarding their potential demand for these cards. While neither the Chinese government nor the involved firms have confirmed the plan, local AI developers currently face a shortage of computing power. Analysts note that Huawei and Cambricon currently control nearly 80% of the Chinese AI server market.
Nvidia previously excluded potential revenue from China data-center chips in its quarterly forecast of $108 billion. Any sales of the new workstation cards would represent additional income for the company. Wall Street analysts maintain a bullish outlook, with all 31 tracked experts rating the stock as a buy and setting an average price target of $324.32.
Market participants are monitoring the situation following reports that national security export controls were discussed during recent high-level diplomatic meetings. Nvidia shares previously experienced volatility in September 2025 after Beijing restricted the purchase of the RTX Pro 6000D model, causing the stock to decline by 2.6% in a single trading session.
