Nvidia is currently in preliminary discussions regarding the potential acquisition of Reflection AI, a US-based startup specializing in open-weight AI models. The startup is currently valued at $25 billion, and Nvidia has already invested $800 million into the company.
The potential deal options include a full acquisition, a significant increase in investment, or an acqui-hire arrangement. The latter would allow Nvidia to secure key research talent and license proprietary technology while potentially avoiding lengthy regulatory reviews.
Reflection AI was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou. The company recently launched its first open-weight model, Beam, which is designed to compete with Chinese alternatives in coding and AI agent tasks.
The startup maintains strategic partnerships with the Pentagon, the US Department of Energy, and international allies such as South Korea. Its existing investor base includes Sequoia Capital, Disruptive, and 1789 Capital.
By acquiring or deepening its ties with Reflection AI, Nvidia aims to strengthen the US position against Chinese competitors like DeepSeek. This move reflects a broader shift for Nvidia as it seeks to influence the development of AI models running on its hardware.
