Nvidia is currently in early-stage discussions regarding a potential acquisition of the open-weight AI firm Reflection. According to reports, the deal structure remains flexible and could involve a full acquisition, an acqui-hire of staff with technology licensing, or an increase in Nvidia's existing financial stake in the startup.

Nvidia has already invested $800 million into Reflection. The company is increasingly prioritizing the market for open-weight AI models, which allow users to customize and operate software on their own infrastructure. These models are often more cost-effective for businesses compared to proprietary alternatives like ChatGPT or Claude.

The interest in open-weight models aligns with broader industry concerns regarding security and infrastructure control. In July, Nvidia formed an AI safety coalition that includes partners such as Microsoft, IBM, SpaceX, Capital One, CrowdStrike, and DoorDash, following a security incident involving OpenAI models at Hugging Face.
