Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that artificial intelligence companies should not be granted exemptions from antitrust or product liability laws. During a nearly two-hour interview on a New York Times podcast, Huang addressed the ongoing debate regarding the regulation of AI development and safety protocols.
Huang reiterated his stance that AI labs bear the responsibility for testing their models to ensure safety before public release. He explicitly criticized the idea of seeking regulatory immunity while simultaneously calling for government oversight, noting that such requests are contradictory.
The comments follow recent proposals from industry figures, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who suggested that AI labs should receive antitrust exemptions to facilitate collaboration on safety. US officials have also noted that some AI firms are seeking liability waivers.
While opposing broad exemptions, Huang expressed support for specific regulations tailored to AI applications. He cited autonomous vehicles as an example, suggesting that if existing oversight by agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is insufficient, new rules should be implemented.
