The National University of Singapore has rebranded its innovation arm to NUSX, setting a target to generate $1 billion in financial returns and impact one billion people by 2035. The organization is shifting its strategy from passive startup investment to active venture building, focusing on identifying promising research and assembling teams to commercialize it.
NUSX has launched an AI-powered platform called Nova, designed to analyze university research for commercial potential, licensing opportunities, and industry partnerships. This initiative is part of a broader effort to streamline the pipeline of talent, technology, and capital, building on the university's two-decade experience with overseas college programs.
A new partnership between NUSX and the Munich-based organization UnternehmerTUM aims to connect European and Asian innovation ecosystems. The collaboration focuses on international venture building, talent exchanges, and investment relationships to help startups leverage the industrial networks of Munich and the market access of Singapore.
The A5X conference highlighted the critical role of infrastructure in AI development, with experts noting that computing resources and energy availability remain key bottlenecks. Discussions also addressed the balance between innovation and regulation, particularly in sectors like healthcare and finance where accountability is essential.
The event featured the Singapore Defense Tech Hackathon, where winners included NeuroMech, which developed a brain-computer interface for unmanned vehicles, and MAELSTROM, which created a system to counter drone swarms. These projects underscore the growing intersection between academic research and defense technology applications.
