Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa announced that the 14th generation Skyline sedan, known as the V38, will debut in December. The company positions this rear-wheel-drive model as a key product for its brand revitalization strategy. The development cycle for the V38 was completed in 26 months, less than half the 55 months required for the previous V37 generation.
The accelerated development timeline is attributed to the integration of AI technologies across design, engineering, testing, and production. Nissan also incorporated operational insights gained from its joint venture with Dongfeng Motor in China, where the company is adapting to local standards for development speed and cost efficiency.
The V38 is built on the FM front-midship platform, which has been updated to meet modern safety and emissions standards. The vehicle will feature design elements inspired by the classic Skyline GT-R, including circular headlights and sculpted fenders. Nissan plans to focus its global strategy on three core model families, aiming for them to account for 90% of total sales.
Under the hood, the new Skyline is expected to feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, similar to the VR30 unit found in the Nissan Z, which produces over 400 horsepower. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 9-speed automatic. The company is also evaluating the potential for a future hybrid version of the model.
