NASA has selected Modulate Space Corporation to build a 5G communications system for lunar surface operations. The project, managed by the Glenn Research Center, aims to integrate Wi-Fi 6 capabilities into a scalable network infrastructure designed for future Moon bases.
The contract is valued at approximately $38 million and follows a firm-fixed-price structure. The work is divided into two distinct phases, focusing on hardware, firmware, and software development to ensure the system meets rigorous operational standards.
The first phase, covering network-in-a-box development and laboratory testing, is scheduled from October 1, 2026, to January 31, 2028. The second phase, involving flight demonstrations on the lunar surface, will run from November 30, 2026, through December 31, 2028.
Through these trials, the agency intends to evaluate system architecture and performance. This approach provides the flexibility required to adapt the technology for long-term lunar communications needs as exploration efforts continue to evolve.
