NASA’s Langley Research Center has entered into a Space Act Agreement with the Virginia Department of Energy. The collaboration focuses on enhancing energy security through the application of NASA’s atmospheric science expertise and specialized data products.
Under the agreement, NASA will provide solar, meteorological, and weather risk datasets to support energy system modeling. This information will be integrated into Virginia Energy’s planning systems to help officials assess electricity demand, generation capacity, and system vulnerabilities.
The partnership utilizes the NASA Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) platform. Data from this system, which draws on research from Langley, the Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Ames Research Center, will be accessible to state researchers via a digital pipeline.
Virginia Energy will use these resources to better prepare for extreme weather conditions and improve long-term energy planning. The initiative was facilitated by the Langley Strategic Partnerships Office, which connects government agencies with NASA’s technical capabilities.
