The Terafab project, led by Elon Musk, is expected to receive its first ASML Twinscan NXE EUV lithography machine by mid-2027. However, the construction of the facility's main building is not scheduled to conclude until late 2027, with equipment installation following thereafter, leading to a period of equipment storage.
Tesla initiated the construction of a semiconductor plant at its Giga Texas campus in April 2026. The project timeline includes 15 months for building construction and an additional six months for installing production systems, aimed at preparing staff for experimental chip manufacturing.
SpaceX selected a site for a separate Terafab plant in Grimes County, Texas, in August 2026. Analysts estimate that the construction of this facility will take 20 months, followed by 17 months for equipment installation and 6 months to reach full capacity, with operations expected to begin in late 2029.
The Terafab facility plans to utilize the Intel 14A process node, which is compatible with existing Low-NA and new High-NA EUV scanners. While Intel expects to start mass production on 14A in late 2028, Terafab's internal production focus is intended to serve the specific needs of Tesla and SpaceX.
