Companies owned by Elon Musk have requested a federal judge to voluntarily dismiss their antitrust lawsuit against Apple. The original complaint alleged that Apple favored OpenAI’s ChatGPT over other chatbot developers by integrating the service into the iPhone operating system, which the plaintiffs claimed hindered competition and limited consumer choice.

Despite dropping the case against Apple, the legal action against OpenAI remains active. The lawsuit accuses the AI company of engaging in anti-competitive behavior to maintain an illegal monopoly in the chatbot market. Apple and OpenAI have consistently denied these allegations, stating that their partnership, which allows Siri to access ChatGPT, is not exclusive.

This litigation is part of a broader history of conflict between Musk and OpenAI. In May, a jury rejected a separate lawsuit filed by Musk that alleged OpenAI violated its founding principles by transitioning to a for-profit model. Additionally, OpenAI recently terminated its relationship with the coding firm Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX.

Apple and OpenAI are also involved in separate legal proceedings against each other. In July, Apple filed a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI and two former Apple employees misappropriated trade secrets. OpenAI has requested the dismissal of these claims, while Apple has accused an OpenAI employee of destroying evidence related to the case.
