Morpho, a modular DeFi lending protocol, has surpassed $3 billion in total deposits. Its core infrastructure, Morpho Blue, was launched in 2024 and delegates risk management decisions to external entities known as curators, such as Steakhouse Financial and Gauntlet.
Curators manage MetaMorpho vaults and typically earn between 5% and 15% of vault performance or management fees. Analysis of distributor contracts indicates that these businesses rely heavily on offchain consulting, protocol subsidies, and token incentives to remain sustainable.
The financial model faces challenges as curators incur significant costs for modeling infrastructure, monitoring, and staffing. For example, a curator managing a $100 million vault with a 5% yield and a 10% performance fee generates approximately $500 000 in annual gross revenue.
The Morpho Association secured $175 million in a funding round led by Paradigm, a16z crypto, and Ribbit Capital. This capital is intended to expand the protocol's open credit network, though the long-term sustainability of the curator ecosystem remains a concern.
Market risks, including MORPHO token volatility, complicate the model, as subsidies often depend on token incentives. Potential paths forward include increasing vault sizes, revising fee structures, or accepting that offchain revenue will remain a permanent feature.
