Morgan Stanley has launched the Digital Asset Lab to evaluate stablecoins, tokenization, and DeFi solutions. The facility serves as a testing ground for new technologies before their integration into the bank's core infrastructure. While the lab is operational, the bank has not yet disclosed specific projects, timelines, or plans for client-facing services.

Amy Oldenburg, who was appointed as the head of digital asset strategy in January, oversees the coordination of these initiatives. She emphasizes that the bank is building foundational infrastructure to avoid future reliance on legacy systems. Oldenburg specifically identifies tokenization as a key area for automating operations and unifying asset management processes.

The bank has already introduced several digital asset products. These include the Stablecoin Reserves Portfolio for issuers and a tokenized share class for the Treasury Securities Portfolio. Additionally, Morgan Stanley offers exchange-traded products linked to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, and has enabled spot trading for these assets on the E*TRADE platform.

The bank continues to explore institutional applications for digital assets, including wealth and investment management. While Oldenburg has previously noted the possibility of holding Bitcoin on the bank's balance sheet, she highlighted that current regulatory requirements remain a significant barrier to such a move.
