Chinese AI startup Moonshot has launched a specialized version of its Kimi model tailored for the financial sector. The company announced that the model can now access data from major US financial institutions, including Standard & Poor’s Global Market Intelligence, Crunchbase, the SEC’s EDGAR system, and the Federal Reserve’s FRED database.
The model also integrates data from the IMF and the World Bank. Moonshot reports that financial firms, such as China International Capital Corporation and Sequoia China, utilize Kimi for financial analysis and reporting. Samuel Fischer, head of Deutsche Bank’s Beijing branch, appeared in a promotional video for the model, though the bank declined to comment on whether it is a client.
Founded in March 2023, Moonshot reached a valuation of $3 billion shortly after its inception. The company has faced significant geopolitical pressure, including threats of sanctions and accusations from US authorities and Anthropic regarding the alleged unauthorized use of the Fable model technology to develop Kimi K3.
The US Department of State issued an ultimatum in August 2026, requiring various nations to align with either the US or Chinese AI development camps. Reuters has previously indicated that Moonshot could be added to the US Entity List, which would impose strict export restrictions on the company.
