Moonshot AI has launched a desktop version of its Kimi Code programming tool, transitioning its AI capabilities from a command-line interface to a graphical user interface. The application is available for macOS on both ARM64 and Intel architectures, as well as for Windows systems.
The desktop client manages projects through workspaces, allowing developers to select local folders for AI analysis. The tool supports various operational modes, including a Plan mode for requirement analysis, a Goal mode for long-term tasks, and a Swarm mode that coordinates multiple sub-agents to handle complex, parallel development workflows.
The interface provides a built-in terminal for executing build, test, and debug commands directly within the environment. Developers can track file changes, review code differences, and manage Git branches, including monitoring commit status and pull request information, to streamline the entire development lifecycle.
For frontend tasks, the software includes an integrated browser for real-time web previews and interaction testing. Users can annotate specific screen areas or web elements, sending screenshots and feedback directly to the AI agent to identify layout or styling issues.
While the original Kimi Code CLI version is open-source, the new desktop application is currently proprietary. Moonshot AI has not provided information regarding potential future plans to open-source the desktop client.
