Boston-based voice intelligence startup Modulate has secured $25 million in a new funding round. The investment was led by Future Ventures, with additional participation from Hyperplane and Lakestar. Prior to this round, the company had raised $41 million, reaching a valuation of $170 million.
Founded in 2017 by Mike Pappas and Carter Huffman, the company now employs between 40 and 45 people. Modulate plans to hire 10 additional staff members in the coming months to focus on model development. The startup is also working to expand its on-premises and on-device deployment capabilities.
The platform utilizes over 100 specialized models categorized into signal extraction and analysis. These tools perform tasks such as emotional analysis, deepfake detection, AI music identification, and intent assessment. The company emphasizes that its use of smaller models reduces the need for specialized hardware.
Modulate provides services to enterprises, including call centers, to monitor AI agent compliance and detect potential scams or cyberattacks. The technology is designed to analyze the nuance of human conversation, offering granular data on customer intent and satisfaction levels beyond basic sentiment tracking.
