The ME Innovation Fund, managed by Mitsubishi Electric, has invested in the startup OptQC. The startup originated from the Furusawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the partnership aims to integrate quantum computing into industrial applications.
OptQC specializes in optical quantum computing architecture designed to decouple system size growth from the number of qubits. The startup has already delivered its first commercial system to a state research institution and provided hardware modules to private enterprises.
Mitsubishi intends to leverage this investment to gain early access to optical quantum hardware and component data. The corporation plans to combine these insights with its own software development and quantum computing technologies to better address market demands and client requirements.
The investment follows a similar move by NTT, which backed OptQC last month. Mitsubishi and NTT have been collaborating since 2025. Their joint roadmap targets the development of a fault-tolerant optical quantum computer featuring 1 million qubits by 2030.
