Microsoft has released version 1.138 of Visual Studio Code, introducing new capabilities for AI agent collaboration and expanded support for the Codex harness. The update focuses on integrating AI agents directly into development containers, allowing them to operate within project-specific environments and dependencies.

To utilize the new development container feature, users must have Docker installed and enable the chat.agentHost.devContainer.enabled setting. Once configured, developers can run agents within local containers, ensuring the AI only accesses the tools and dependencies explicitly defined for that specific project.

The update also enhances the Codex harness, enabling users to maintain a continuous session between ChatGPT and VS Code. Users can now switch between GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT subscriptions, with the ability to toggle models via a selector if both accounts are active.

The Codex harness now supports integration with built-in VS Code tools, extensions, and MCP tools. For those using ChatGPT-based models, the system allows for direct invocation of image generation tools within the chat interface, streamlining the development workflow.

Additionally, Microsoft has introduced a preview version of a session cleanup feature. This tool allows developers to mark completed tasks as finished, helping to organize the agent window while preserving past conversations for future reference.
