Microsoft is preparing to launch the Surface Laptop Ultra, which will feature the Nvidia RTX Spark platform. This device integrates Nvidia's Arm-based Grace CPU and Blackwell GPU, marking a shift toward workstation-level performance in a laptop form factor.

The RTX Spark platform comes in two configurations. The base model includes an 18-core CPU and 5120 CUDA cores, while the high-end version features a 20-core CPU and 6144 CUDA cores. The system utilizes unified memory, offering options from 24GB up to 128GB.

The laptop is equipped with a 15-inch Mini-LED PixelSense Ultra display with 2000 nits peak HDR brightness and 262 PPI. The chassis is under 18mm thick and weighs less than 2.04kg, housing ports including HDMI, three USB-C, one USB-A, and a full-size SD card slot.

Targeting AI developers and creative professionals, the device leverages the Nvidia CUDA ecosystem for local AI model execution. It aims to compete in the professional workstation market, with entry-level pricing expected to exceed $2000.

Early engineering samples have faced challenges regarding thermal management, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Celsius under load, and software compatibility issues related to the Arm-based Windows architecture that Microsoft and Nvidia are currently addressing.
