Microsoft is currently prioritizing the development of the Windows 11 27H2 update over the release of a new Windows 12 operating system. The company intends to focus on improving system quality, performance, and overall reliability for existing users.
Unlike the previous 26H2 update, which utilized an enablement package, the 27H2 version will involve replacing and upgrading core operating system components. This transition requires an extended testing phase, with Windows Insider previews expected to commence earlier than usual.
A key technical improvement in the 27H2 update is the support for Intel APX instruction sets. This change aims to boost 64-bit throughput, potentially increasing efficiency for applications during startup, multitasking, and heavy workloads, depending on hardware and software optimization.
The update will also introduce a new default wallpaper design. The current Bloom aesthetic will be replaced by a new version featuring cloud elements while maintaining a colorful folded style. Microsoft plans to offer specific visual themes for various user categories, including gaming, office, and creative work.
The company is scheduled to showcase the new default wallpaper at the Ignite 2026 conference, which will take place in San Francisco from November 17 to November 20, 2026.
