Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, has advocated for the implementation of global safety regulations for the artificial intelligence industry. During an interview with the BBC, he argued that the sector requires clear legal requirements rather than relying on self-regulation.

Smith proposed that companies should be legally mandated to report incidents and notify affected parties if an AI agent malfunctions or is compromised. He also suggested that independent external auditors should evaluate new products before they are released to the public.

The executive emphasized the need for emergency stop mechanisms to halt or slow down systems that lose control. He highlighted the United Kingdom as a key player in promoting these global standards, specifically noting the role of the AI Safety Institute.

While acknowledging that major firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, SpaceX, Meta, and Google have recently agreed to work with independent auditors, Smith maintains that such voluntary measures are insufficient. He warned that the primary concern lies with less responsible market participants.
