Microsoft has launched the Driver Quality Initiative (DQI) to address system instability caused by faulty third-party drivers. The company is collaborating with hardware partners, including Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, to establish stricter quality standards for driver development, testing, and release processes.
Intel has become one of the first partners to implement these new standards, releasing driver version 32.0.101.9034 in October 2026. This update provides support for Windows 11 26H2, marking a tangible step in the rollout of the initiative. Intel has also applied these new specifications to its recent Wi-Fi and Bluetooth driver updates.
The initiative follows the 2026 revival of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC), where Microsoft convened with engineering teams and manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, and HP. The goal is to reduce system crashes and compatibility errors by fostering cooperation across the entire PC ecosystem.
While many OEM partners are currently testing drivers that meet the new DQI criteria, a broad public release is expected to take time. Microsoft aims to enhance the overall reliability of the Windows platform to maintain competitiveness in the PC market and improve the user experience across all devices.
