Charles Lamanna, currently leading Office and Teams, is considered a potential successor to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. This internal assessment follows his recent appointment as Executive Vice President of Copilot, Agents, and Platform in March 2026.
Lamanna oversees the integration of AI assistants across Microsoft products. His strategy involves a multi-model approach for Copilot, which includes incorporating Anthropic models alongside OpenAI technology. Microsoft plans to pay Anthropic over $2 billion annually for this access.
The executive's influence expanded following the departure of LinkedIn's Ryan Roslansky on October 1, 2026. As part of the subsequent reorganization, leaders Sumit Chauhan and Lan Ye now report to Lamanna, consolidating his control over the Microsoft 365 portfolio.
Lamanna joined Microsoft in 2013 after the company acquired his startup, MetricsHub. His career at the firm includes roles in Azure infrastructure, as well as leadership positions in Power Platform and Dynamics 365.
While Lamanna is viewed as a key figure in the company's AI strategy, Microsoft has not announced any official CEO transition plans. Satya Nadella remains in his current position, and the succession talk reflects Lamanna's internal standing.
