Microsoft is currently developing a significantly updated search interface for Windows 11. This new version is designed to be independent of the existing Start menu, which currently continues to use the legacy search functionality. The company plans to fully integrate these two search systems by 2027.
The redesigned search feature allows users to disable Bing search results and introduces a new 'Actions' capability for modifying system settings directly. Microsoft is also exploring the possibility of enabling users to send emails via Outlook directly through the search interface, similar to existing phone-link features.
Tali Roth, head of Windows Shell experiences, confirmed that the company is evaluating potential changes to the Win key's functionality. Microsoft is proceeding with caution due to established user habits. Options under consideration include assigning the Win key to trigger the new search interface or expanding its utility to support more complex shortcuts.
