Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revised his perspective on artificial intelligence alignment. He previously believed that as AI systems grew more powerful, their behavior would naturally align with human values and goals. Now, he states that he no longer believes this synchronization will occur automatically.
During a recent podcast appearance, Nadella noted that while AI capabilities have continued to improve as expected, the challenge of alignment remains unresolved. He now views alignment as a more complex and distinct issue that does not simply scale alongside model performance.
In an October 10 post on X, Nadella advocated for stronger external security controls. He suggested that companies should treat AI models as internal security threats and assume they could be compromised. He emphasized the need for deterministic system design and human oversight.
Nadella is not alone in his concerns regarding AI control. Other industry leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have previously warned about potential risks. In July, over 1,000 industry professionals signed a letter highlighting the danger that AI development could outpace human control.
