Mark Russinovich, CTO of Microsoft Azure, successfully ported the Windows utility ZoomIt to macOS using AI. The tool, which has been maintained for over 20 years, received its latest Windows update, version 12.22, on September 10.
During a weekend project, Russinovich utilized AI to handle the porting process. After providing approximately 12 prompts, the AI implemented the core functionality of the application in less than 30 minutes.
Over the course of two days, Russinovich continued to work with AI to refine the software. The current macOS version now supports roughly 90% of the original features, including screen recording, video editing, panoramic screenshots, and a break timer.
The AI assisted in navigating macOS-specific requirements, such as system permissions, interface guidelines, and keyboard handling. The new Mac version also includes the DemoType feature, which allows users to input preset text during presentations.
ZoomIt for Mac is available as a free, open-source tool. It requires macOS 14 Sonoma or a later version to run and can be installed via Homebrew or the official Microsoft GitHub repository.
