Investor Michael Burry has publicly called for a severe market crash to prevent the initial public offerings of AI companies OpenAI and Anthropic. Burry stated that such a downturn would serve the benefit of humanity by stopping these firms from raising capital on public markets.

Anthropic is reportedly considering a valuation exceeding $2 trillion. Financial data indicates the company recorded a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, with planned cloud and infrastructure obligations reaching $518 billion. Other reports suggest an operating loss closer to $8.06 billion.

OpenAI has officially delayed its potential public listing until 2027, with CEO Sam Altman citing current market conditions as unfavorable for an IPO. Burry has expressed concern that these AI labs will absorb and destroy trillions of dollars in capital while failing to achieve artificial general intelligence.

Burry recently adjusted his investment strategy by shifting from short positions to purchasing put options on several stocks linked to the artificial intelligence sector. He also publicly endorsed an analysis by the Grok chatbot, which characterized the current AI industry as a bubble driven by unprofitable large language models.
