Meta has announced the construction of Petal, the world's first petabit-class transoceanic submarine cable. The project will utilize multi-core fiber technology on a large scale to achieve a transmission bandwidth of 1 Pbps, which is equivalent to 1,000 Tbps.
The cable will span approximately 7,000 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean, connecting the United States and France. According to the company, this capacity is twice that of the most advanced existing submarine cables covering similar distances.
Meta is partnering with Japan's NEC and Sumitomo Electric Industries to develop the infrastructure. Additionally, the French telecommunications operator Orange will provide support for the cable landing operations within France.
The project is currently scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2029. Meta stated that the bandwidth provided by Petal is sufficient to support the streaming music needs of 75% of the global population simultaneously.
