Meta has introduced its new VR glasses, priced at $1,299. The device weighs approximately 100 grams, making it roughly five times lighter than typical VR headsets. Unlike fully enclosed goggles, this design allows for peripheral vision by combining a live video feed of the surroundings with an open-air frame that rests on the ears.
The device features a field of view of 70 by 66 degrees and an angular resolution of 37 pixels per degree (ppd). It utilizes passthrough vision rather than transparent lenses, which avoids the issue of virtual light competing with the real world. The system also tracks hand movements even when they are outside the direct field of view.
The product is positioned as an alternative to heavier headsets like the Apple Vision Pro, which costs $3,700, and the Steam Frame. Meta vice president of wearables Alex Himel stated that the company's future focus is on augmented reality glasses. If the new VR glasses perform well, Meta may shift away from producing traditional headsets.
