Meta provides every Muse user with a cloud-based computer running a full Ubuntu Linux image. According to David Singleton, VP of Engineering at Meta Superintelligence Labs, this environment allows users to install software, compile code, and browse the web as they would on a physical machine.
The system utilizes a 'Muse Secure VM' architecture, which isolates the user workspace within a 'Runtime Cell'. A 'Sentinel' process monitors sensitive actions from outside this cell, while credentials and passwords remain stored externally to ensure security against unauthorized access and prompt injection.
Users have full transparency into the Runtime Cell, with access to all system files and binaries. A built-in file explorer allows for direct navigation, and users can export their data via the settings menu. The architecture prevents users from gaining privileged access to Meta's infrastructure.
The Muse application attracted over 500 000 users during its first week of availability and reached the top spot on the Apple App Store. During Meta Connect 2026, the company introduced features including real-time video chats, dedicated email addresses, and Mac application control.
