Meta and OpenAI are developing dedicated hardware for their AI agents, aiming to succeed where previous devices like the Humane AI Pin failed. The companies plan to prime the market by first establishing their software agents among users before releasing physical products.
OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on a hardware project, with a release date scheduled no earlier than February 2027. At its recent DevDay, the company introduced Dots, a platform featuring customizable AI agents that CEO Sam Altman suggested could eventually transition to a physical device.
Meta is preparing to launch the Muse Charm, a pendant-like device featuring the Muse AI agent, before the upcoming holiday shopping season. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the device as a fast way to interact with the AI, comparing its form factor to a keychain.
OpenAI executives indicated that Dots is designed to function as an always-on assistant for long-term tasks. The company plans to evolve ChatGPT into a personal assistant accessible via various communication channels, aiming to integrate AI agents into daily life.
