Meta and Microsoft have significantly reduced internal usage of Anthropic’s Claude Code throughout 2026. At Meta, the number of internal users of the tool fell from approximately 60,000 at the start of the year to about 30,000. Employees have transitioned to internal alternatives, with MetaCode now serving over 30,000 users and Muse Code exceeding 6,000.

Meta previously spent over $105 million on Claude Code during a single 28-day period. Microsoft has also adjusted its strategy, cutting its projected annual internal spending on Anthropic by more than one-third from an initial forecast of over $1 billion. The company reduced monthly budgets for these tools from $100,000 to approximately $10,000.

Microsoft is shifting its internal engineering workflows toward GitHub Copilot CLI and OpenAI models. These changes align with broader cost-management initiatives and concerns regarding data governance as companies mature their own AI models. Additionally, the increasing overlap between Anthropic’s products and the offerings of Meta and Microsoft has altered the supplier-client relationship.

Despite the reduction in internal employee usage, Microsoft maintains its investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic. Customer-facing usage of Claude via Azure and Amazon Bedrock continues to grow. According to Anthropic’s IPO prospectus, two unnamed customers account for approximately 25% of the company's total revenue.
