Stefan Weckbach, who oversees Mercedes-AMG, the G-Class line, and Maybach, stated that the company aims to preserve the core characteristics of the G-Class while preparing it for the future. The brand intends to maintain the vehicle's off-road capabilities and iconic design elements despite evolving market demands.
CEO Ola Källenius acknowledged that the company previously underestimated the demand for V8 engines when shifting focus toward four-cylinder models like the C63. Following this experience, Mercedes-Benz is now prioritizing the preferences of enthusiasts who value traditional engine performance and driving feel.
The company is considering the potential return of V12 engines to its lineup, as it currently continues to produce V12 units for the Maybach S-Class. The decision to expand the use of these engines will depend on future cost-benefit analyses, especially as some governments ease emission regulations.
Mercedes-Benz is also planning to expand the G-Class family by introducing a smaller, entry-level model. The company is managing this development carefully to ensure that the new addition does not compromise the premium positioning and reputation of the established G-Class brand.
