Maserati is reportedly in talks with Huawei and JAC to jointly develop two new electric vehicle models: a mid-size SUV and a GT model. The GT vehicle is expected to be the first to reach the market. While the final agreement status remains unconfirmed, the project involves shipping vehicle kits from Anhui, China, for final assembly and interior finishing in Italy.
Huawei is expected to provide onboard electronics and software for the new vehicles. In China, the cars may be marketed under the Maextro brand, a joint venture between Huawei and JAC. The target markets for these vehicles include Italy, France, Germany, and the Middle East. Reports suggest that the first model could launch no earlier than the second half of 2027.
This initiative follows the existing partnership between Stellantis, the parent company of Maserati, and Leapmotor. Stellantis acquired a stake of over 20 percent in Leapmotor by May 2024, holding 51 percent of the joint venture and two board seats. Maserati currently faces financial challenges, reporting an operating loss of €198 million for the previous year.
Sales performance for Maserati has declined significantly, with fewer than 8,000 vehicles sold in 2025. This figure represents a drop of more than 80 percent compared to the brand's record sales in 2017. The company previously introduced the GranTurismo Folgore in October 2022, which featured a 92.5 kWh battery and a three-motor electric powertrain.
