VK, the parent company of Mail.ru, is reducing the free 1 TB cloud storage capacity previously granted to users. Starting in November, these accounts will be limited to 8 GB of storage.
The 1 TB storage was originally offered for free between December 20, 2013, and January 20, 2014, to promote the launch of the Mail.ru cloud service. Users were required to install the application to receive the permanent gift.
According to the company, the changes affect less than 0.5% of its cloud service subscribers. Users have been notified to either transfer their files or switch to a paid subscription plan.
The company cited section 6.4.1 of its license agreement, which allows the licensor to modify service content and features at any time. Previously, the company had attempted to reduce storage for inactive accounts.
This is the second instance of the company canceling permanent storage quotas. In November 2024, it reduced the 100 GB free storage tier for early users, which affected less than 1% of the user base.
