Lumentum Holdings reported that its production capacity for optoelectronic components is fully booked through nearly 2029. The surge in demand is driven by hyperscalers and tech firms constructing data centers for AI workloads. The company primarily produces advanced indium phosphide devices, including EML chips and pump lasers, which are essential for high-speed data transmission.
The supply gap remains significant despite efforts to expand production. Projections indicate an unmet demand of approximately 70% for certain products in 2027 and roughly 30% in 2028. CEO Michael Hurlston noted that the company is currently struggling to keep pace with customer requirements.
The timeline for sold-out capacity has shifted significantly over the past six months. In April 2026, Lumentum expected to be sold out through 2028, but by October 2026, the window extended to nearly 2029. This trend highlights the intensifying pressure on optical hardware supply chains.
Financial results reflect this growth, with Lumentum reporting revenue of $1.01 billion in fiscal Q4 2026, ending in June 2026. This represents a 109% increase year over year, largely attributed to the components segment. Additionally, in March 2026, Nvidia invested $2 billion in Lumentum, linked to multi-billion dollar purchase commitments for optical components.
