The Linux 7.4 kernel has integrated updates to its HID subsystem, introducing preliminary driver support for Nintendo Switch 2 controllers. The development was led by Vicki Pfau on behalf of Valve and involved 16 rounds of patches before reaching the mainline kernel.
The new driver for Switch 2 controllers utilizes a master-slave structure to handle the device's split interface design, covering basic input and vibration functions for Joy-Con 2, Pro Controller 2, and GameCube controllers. Currently, Bluetooth pairing and advanced features remain under development.
The update also introduces the hid-pulsar driver, enabling support for various Pulsar gaming mice, including the X2 V2, X2H, X2A, and Xlite V3 models. This driver provides battery monitoring and supports polling rates of 1000Hz and 4000Hz, while also covering compatible devices from brands like Kysona, ATK, and VXE.
Linux 7.4 expands hardware support for AMD Zen 6 architecture through the Sensor Fusion Hub driver. Additionally, the release includes power management fixes for the Apple Touch Bar and the ASUS ROG Ally handheld console to improve overall system reliability.
