Lila Ibrahim, the first Chief AI Readiness Officer at Google DeepMind, argues that the potential benefits of artificial intelligence exceed its associated risks. She emphasizes that these positive outcomes are not automatic but depend on the active preparation of workers and communities for the integration of AI into their daily lives.
Ibrahim transitioned to her current role after serving as the founding Chief Operating Officer of DeepMind, a position she held since joining the lab in April 2018. Her professional background includes previous tenures at Intel, the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, and the online education platform Coursera.
The strategy advocated by Ibrahim focuses on collaborative development, ensuring that communities and workers are involved in the creation of AI tools rather than simply receiving finished products. This approach aims to address the societal implications of technologies such as Gemini and AlphaFold.
Practical application of this collaborative strategy is currently visible in the education sector. DeepMind has developed tools like LearnLM, which are designed to support classroom environments. Ibrahim was also included in the inaugural TIME list of the 100 Most Influential People in AI.
