The Document Foundation announced that LibreOffice will not incorporate artificial intelligence features in the foreseeable future. This decision follows the release of the latest version of the software in late August, which explicitly lacks generative AI capabilities.
The organization maintains that this is a deliberate design choice intended to ensure that user documents are not uploaded to external servers. LibreOffice emphasizes that its software functions without a network connection, allowing users to retain full control over their data.
The foundation stated that currently no AI integration meets its requirements for data privacy and independence from single providers. However, users can still connect to local AI models by installing third-party software extensions.
LibreOffice serves tens of millions of users and organizations. The developers noted that they will continue to monitor the development of AI technology, though they currently prioritize keeping data on the local machine to satisfy security and audit standards.
