Land Rover is developing a compact SUV, unofficially referred to as the Defender Sport. Recent prototype sightings reveal the vehicle features a rear-mounted spare wheel on the tailgate, a design element intended to distinguish the model from other premium crossovers that typically omit spares to reduce weight and emissions.
The vehicle is built on the EMA architecture, which supports an 800-volt electrical system and rapid charging capabilities. While the platform was originally designed for electric vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover has updated the architecture to accommodate hybrid powertrains in response to market demand, particularly in the United States.
The upcoming SUV will feature an upright roof and squared-off tail, contrasting with the fastback design of the electric Range Rover GT, which shares the same EMA platform. The model is expected to launch around 2027, entering a segment that will also include a smaller Mercedes G-Class and the revived Freelander brand from Chery.
