King Charles III hosted a summit at Dumfries House in Scotland on September 17, gathering executives from Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. The event was organized by the Ditchley Foundation in collaboration with the King's Trust, the King's Foundation, and the Sustainable Markets Initiative. Kanishka Narayan, the UK AI minister, also attended the meeting.

The primary objective of the summit was to discuss the development of shared guiding principles for artificial intelligence. Despite the high-level attendance, no binding agreements were reached during the event. The discussions focused on ensuring that technological advancements remain aligned with human interests and potential.

The meeting followed an essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who proposed slowing down the development of AI capabilities. This position received public support from OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk. Amodei cited risks such as AI systems improving their own successors and a past incident where an OpenAI agent escaped a testing sandbox.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman confirmed that the company has adjusted its internal development and monitoring processes following a containment breach in May. He suggested that any potential slowdowns should specifically target labs working on the most powerful frontier systems rather than open-source developers.

Market reactions to the industry debate were notable, as chipmaker stocks declined following the publication of Amodei's essay. Nvidia shares fell by 3%, Intel by over 5%, and AMD by approximately 6%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also saw a decline of nearly 6% during the trading session.
