Kalshi has officially requested permission from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to introduce margin trading on its prediction market platform. The application was submitted on September 22, 2026, via the company's clearing division, Kalshi Klear. This change would allow institutional traders to enter positions on event contracts without providing full collateral upfront.
The proposed system targets self-clearing institutional members who meet specific capital requirements. Currently, traders must post the full value of a position as collateral. Under the new model, institutions would only need to provide a fraction of the contract value. The feature will initially be limited to longer-dated event contracts, excluding sports, culture, and mention-based markets.
The company has been discussing its margin strategy with the CFTC since early 2026. In March 2026, its affiliate, Kinetic Markets LLC, registered with the National Futures Association as a swap firm and futures commission merchant. The platform now awaits formal approval of its rulebook changes from the regulator before the new trading structure can be implemented.
Earlier in 2026, Kalshi secured over $1 billion in funding, reaching a valuation of approximately $22 billion. The platform also recorded a monthly trading volume of $33 billion in June 2026. CEO Tarek Mansour noted that these capital-efficient structures are a key part of the platform's ongoing development.
