Bob Michele, head of global fixed income at JPMorgan Asset Management, stated that the bond market has reached a point of maximum pain. This assessment marks a significant shift from his earlier position in 2026, when he characterized bonds as an attractive investment opportunity.

The 10-year Treasury yield is currently hovering near or exceeding 5%. According to Michele, this trend has negatively impacted portfolios holding longer-duration Treasuries, as bond prices move inversely to yields.

Michele identifies several factors contributing to the current market environment, including persistent inflation and the Federal Reserve's ongoing efforts to balance economic mandates. He also highlighted the risks associated with the high volume of Treasury debt issuance required to finance fiscal deficits.

The executive manages the GFICC group at JPMorgan Asset Management, which oversees global strategies in fixed income, currencies, and commodities. Michele previously expressed concerns regarding economic risks in 2023, drawing parallels to the 2008 financial crisis.
