John Rogers, co-CEO of Ariel Investments, suggests that investors should pivot toward overlooked consumer stocks as the current artificial intelligence market trend faces potential instability. He draws parallels between the current market environment and the conditions that preceded the 2000 internet bubble collapse, noting that he has not observed such deep valuation discounts in 20 to 30 years.
Rogers highlights J.M. Smucker as a key pick, noting the company has risen nearly 26% over the last six months, a performance comparable to Nvidia's 28% growth in the same period. Analysts expect a further 21% upside for Smucker over the next year. The firm argues that demand for consumer staples like coffee and peanut butter remains independent of AI developments.
Other companies identified by Rogers include OneSpaWorld, which has gained about 11% this year with a projected 36% upside according to analysts. Madison Square Garden Entertainment has seen an increase of roughly 49%, while Sphere Entertainment has grown by more than 8%. Rogers maintains that these entertainment and consumer-focused businesses are resilient against AI disruption.
The S&P 500 recently reached record levels, with technology stocks accounting for approximately one-third of the index. The top 10 companies currently hold nearly 40% of the index's total value. Despite the current optimism surrounding AI-linked tech, Rogers emphasizes that value investing in less glamorous sectors may offer significant opportunities once the current market cycle shifts.
