Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed the controversy surrounding model distillation during a television appearance on September 28. When questioned if the practice constitutes theft, Huang characterized it as competition, noting that companies frequently dismantle Nvidia products to analyze their internal workings.
Huang suggested that businesses concerned about their technology being used for distillation should rely on customer management and service termination. He emphasized that companies can restrict access to their models through contract terms and technical controls rather than relying on legislative bans.
Model distillation, a technique introduced by Turing Award winner Geoffrey Hinton, involves training smaller student models using outputs from larger teacher models. While standard distillation is a recognized research method, disputes arise when companies bypass security protocols to scrape data from closed-source models.
Huang's perspective contrasts with recent statements from US Treasury Secretary Bessent, who in July 2026 labeled distillation as theft and proposed sanctions against foreign firms using US-developed model technology. Nvidia's stance prioritizes commercial frameworks over government intervention.
