The Phoronix lab conducted a comparative performance analysis of the Intel Xeon 678X and the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X. The testing involved nearly 400 benchmarks, covering power consumption and frequency metrics across both workstation platforms.

The Intel Xeon 678X features 48 cores and 96 threads based on Redwood Cove P-cores. It operates with a base frequency of 2.4GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4.9GHz, with a base power rating of 300W and a maximum turbo power of 360W.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X is equipped with 64 Zen 5 cores, a base clock of 3.2GHz, and a boost clock up to 5.4GHz, with a 350W TDP. Testing was performed at both full capacity and a restricted 48-core configuration to match the Xeon 678X.

Hardware setups included the HP Z4 G6i workstation for the Intel processor using quad-channel DDR5-6400 memory, and the System76 Thelio Major for the AMD processor using quad-channel DDR5-5600 memory.

Both systems operated on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, utilizing the Linux 7.0 kernel and GCC 15.2 compiler. The testing environment maintained consistent performance scaling governor and EPP modes across both workstations to ensure standardized results.
